Beyond Design

Design is more than just the creation of functional features – it can establish identity, evoke emotions and convey values. It can inspire people and invite them to use a product. This is also and especially true in lift construction, particularly at the interface with architecture. Marius Schreyer's presentation focuses on the design of lifts as a long-term, strategic task: innovative technologies, stringent and concise design, and clarity in form and function make the lift a brand ambassador and a special brand experience. ‘Beyond Design’ means thinking of lifts as spaces for communication – not just as a means of transport.

The modernisation of existing lift systems is becoming increasingly important in view of the ageing lift stock. Whereas in the past, safety aspects were the main reason for modernisation, today the focus is increasingly on requirements for better accessibility and higher energy efficiency. The European Lift Association (ELA) has published the ‘SAEL White Paper’ (SAEL = Safety, Accessibility and Energy Performance of Existing Lifts) on this topic. This document describes a number of modernisation solutions that can improve not only the safety but also the accessibility and energy efficiency of existing lift systems.
